Discovering the “DaVinci Fold”:
On a blistering summer afternoon in Nevada back in 2007, while driving home from work in my air-conditioner-less Jeep Wrangler, I tuned into an interview on KNPR (Public Radio) featuring Slavisa Pesci, an Italian information technologist. Pesci was fervently discussing his groundbreaking theory about Leonardo da Vinci's iconic painting, The Last Supper. This revelation came at a time when the world was still buzzing with the success of Dan Brown's 2003 novel The Da Vinci Code, which had been adapted into a movie in 2006, reigniting global interest in da Vinci's genius. Pesci’s discovery involved layering a reverse translucent image of The Last Supper over a standard version of the same painting, revealing hidden images and characters. As a devoted fan of Leonardo and a Photoshop enthusiast, I was thrilled and couldn’t wait to get home to try replicating Pesci’s fascinating theory. The moment I sat down at my computer, I jumped right into recreating this captivating technique.
As I studied the images in awe, I became intrigued by the idea of not just sliding the two full-length images together, but instead just folding the translucent one in half. This approach would give me a clear starting point and endpoint for the new image. However, the question lingered: where should I make the fold? It struck me that there was only one wall lamp behind the characters in this new configuration. On the opposite side of the image, the Apostle Thomas was depicted "pointing towards the sky," a gesture that reminded me of John the Baptist in another famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci. This observation sparked the idea of bringing Thomas closer to the light source, aligning them so that Thomas would point directly at the lamp on the wall. In doing so, new characters appeared, and with that, the innovative technique I came to call the "DaVinci Fold" was born.
To my surprise, over the past 15 years, I had eagerly awaited the emergence of a similar theory, yet it never came to fruition. However, during my continued exploration of Leonardo da Vinci’s other works, I made an intriguing discovery. By applying the "DaVinci Fold" technique to several of his masterpieces, I uncovered a series of mysterious results. Additionally, I noticed the same pattern appearing in the works of other renowned Renaissance artists who, like Leonardo, had studied under Andrea del Verrocchio. The consistency of this pattern was too significant to be dismissed as mere coincidence.

Historical Fact:
On the fateful date of Friday the 13th, October 1307, Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, along with other Templars from the central house in Paris, were arrested at dawn on charges of heresy and other fabricated offenses. The charges were orchestrated by King Philip the 'Fair' of France and Pope Clement V. Molay endured seven years of torture before being sentenced to death by burning at the stake in Paris in 1314. In tribute to the 'heretical' Knights Templar, this book was published on Friday the 13th, in January of 2023.
